For those of you who don’t know it, this is where I went to high school.
I love this shot! I never ever saw this and definitely don’t remember when there was noting in front of the school. For you non Detroiters, Mumford was (and still is until the wrecking ball hits it in about a year) the perfect shade of baby blue limestone with maroon touches. It’s a wild looking school because of the color and takes up an entire city block. It’s a fantastic Deco building. Lot of good folks went there like Jerry Bruckheimer, The Winans, The Clark Sisters, ME, even Ivan Boesky, king of the insider trading scandals of the 80′s. You can read more about Mumford on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mumford_High_School
All that vacant land you see in this shot became the world’s first minature driving course – Tiny streets, miniature stop signs, traffic lights, etc. That’s where I learned to drive.
Karen, where did you find this shot?

It’s off ebay… When I did a quick Mumford search, it came up in ebay completed w/no bids???…It hasn’t been relisted as yet. I thought it was a great early photo.
I loved that minature driving course… I hope I’m remembering this right??…Didn’t they even buy compact cars for the Mini Course, seems like I remember a Ford Falcon?
This is one of the thousands of newswire photos that are now online. The Detroit News and Free Press are selling/sold their archives at auction somewhere??? Many ebay sellers in TN are selling the photos.
