Roadrunner Mailbox (Acme brand, no doubt)

All over the world, people customize their mailboxes.  Here’s one in South Palm Springs that I walked by today.  Not unlike a real roadrunner, it’s a little hard to see due to it’s natural camoflauge markings, not to mention my bad shot.  A little concerned about it’s legs, they look a little atrophic, which is maybe what happens to birds when they’re constantly being propped up by a post.  In that case, kudos to the homeowner for the realism attempt.

I love when people customize their mailboxes. I don’t even care if I like what they’ve done or not, it just seems like such a cheery thing to do for the roadside.

I like the little legs and claws just hanging there, though they probably could have positioned them a little better to make it look like he was running. And do road runners have big bushy tails like that?

Yes roadrunners have long tails which flick up and down. We see lots of them here in the desert. They can be mean birds when they catch lizards and small snakes and then thrash them violently about (sometimes bashing them against rocks), beating them to a pulp before they eat them.

I hate to be critical of the roadrunner. They don’t have teeth or hands, if I were in that condition I’d probably smash a stalk of asparagus against a rock if I had to. Plus, they’re birds, aren’t they? I think of most of them as cartoon characters, except maybe a pteradactyl.
