Jealous

There seems to be no end to ceramic owls made during the 70′s, but I actually stumbled across this planter that was made in the 40′s and it really has a lot of character in its pose and expression. He looks like a gentle, very tired professor with his sleepy expression, bow-tie, vest, and middle-aged paunch. There are no markings on it, but an old man sold it to me at his garage sale and claimed that he’s had it since just shortly after WWII. The crazing on it backs this up.

As you’ve said, owl planters, candle holders, etc. are a dime a dozen but one that actually has expression and attitude, not to mention a little suit on, is rare. He’s fantastic. Great colors too. I hope he gets happier with a little plant in him.
