Apparently, airlines used to give these figural bottles of flavored Saki to First Class customers in the 1960’s. This one is Menthe (Midori) flavored and was made by the House of Koshu as part of their “rainbow” series of flavored Saki. The Kokeshi doll is 7″ tall and has a silver screw-off top and a head made of wood, then hand painted. There’s actual Saki in the bottle, but I’m thinking tasting it after fifty years would be like committing Hari Kari.

Just thinking about the fact that one could have been gripping this bottle mid flight makes me SWOON. It’s something as simple as that that could get me to be a much more avid traveler were they offered today instead of the cheap little plastic bottles that grace flights now. Absolutely gorgeous.
