This is a custom-made, one-of-a-kind, 2 foot gnome, created in the likeness of the British film director Ken Russell (who is my father). It was commissioned by my mother one Christmas as a gift because he loved garden gnomes. He hated it, and now I have it with me in Los Angeles. It both freaks people out and is a source of amusement, which I guess is what all good kitsch is supposed to do.

Needless to say, given this garden gnome’s most regal genealogy I’m thrilled that you’ve deigned to place it on the humble shelves here at AWMOK!

The likeness to its film royalty subject is uncanny, though you would know best. I hope your mom wasn’t too disappointed that your dad didn’t like it, especially given that he loved garden gnomes. I would be most honored if anyone had a garden gnome carved in my likeness. Well, I’m happy that it remains in your family. Most people just have photographs and videos to look at. You have that, your dad’s films and press and, most importantly, his gnome.

This is kitsch at it’s highest level and I am a bit jealous as I LOVE gnomes.

What is around your dad’s neck here? 2ft tall? I have a ceramic gnome from the 40’s that belonged to my pop but is no way as tall as this gorgeous gnome likeness of your father.

    Right on!

    Keep the kitsch coming!

A portrait in gnome form is truly the highest compliment anyone can receive (sock monkey portraits being the second, of course). This is incredible and I’m sorry to hear your brilliant father hated it but glad the result is that is has a place in your home!

It really does look like him too!
