WELL…WHAT A GENIUS PIECE OF MARKETING THIS WAS…I’VE NEVER COUNTED THEM, BUT WOW…CAN IT BE A DADA CONCEPTUAL ART JOKE? WHEN I FOUND THIS FESTIVE BATCH OF BROWN PLASTIC GRASSHOPPERS IN A STORE IN THE 80’S I SCREAMED!!! THAT DISCO ROCK RADIO YOU POSTED MADE ME THINK OF ALL THESE WONDERFUL CHEAP-O CRAPPY TOYS THAT THEY WOULD SELL ON 14TH STREET IN NY…I GOTTA LOOK IN BOXES TO FIND MORE…I’M ABOUT TO MOVE & AM HAVING A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN! WISH ME LUCK…

I’m not a creepy crawler spidery caterpillary kind of gal but I’ve always loved these cheaply packaged toys in their thin plastic bags and colorful but basic labels. I bought tons of stuff like this in the 1970s. I rarely had any interest in what was inside but the feel of the wafer thin plastic and how it got foggy within weeks drove me nuts. I get excited just thinking about it now.

I love how the label boasts there are 24 toys inside. 24 tiny plastic grasshoppers does not really equal 24 “toys”.

I used to live on 14th and 5th when I first moved to New York in 1969 and raided the bins in those stores on the downtown side of the street just like you, more times than I can count.
