1929 Silhouette Art/Print

Submitted by denny January 6th, 2010

I’m not a big fan of Silhouette art and only have a few. This was an amazing find, done by Eveline von Maydell. She was of Russian royalty. She was born in 1860 and lived to 1960. This print is so deco and is dated as “1929 Miami Beach”. I love it and found this for $3.00 with it’s original frame sitting next to it in a junk box at the Wellfleet Market here on the Cape. I am not entirely sure of the antiquity of this piece but anything from the 20’s and I love it.

I’ve seen a lot of silhouette art but this one is wayyyyyy out there, especially for 1929. Usually these kinds of silhouettes have people sitting on fancy chairs or by the edge of the sea or some such similar sophisticated background. But this scene with hobbyhorses, toy trucks and scooters is a little nutty (in the best way possible).

What’s the kid in the middle doing? Jumping the truck? Sewing? Lighting explosives?
