Shirley Shechtman is the soon-to-be 86-year-old mother of my best friend (since 1st grade), Allen. She’s still a working school teacher in Chicago, but she’s always wanted to sing on-stage. So for her birthday present, Allen hired a top cabaret director (Beckie Menzie), who brought in a handful of the most popular cabaret performers in Chi-Town (including Tommy Michael, Joan Curto, Laura Freeman, Daryl Nitz, Jen Chada and Kevin Barthel) to perform with Shirley at Temple Beth-Israel in Skokie, Illinois on June 27th when she makes her long-awaited singing debut. Shirley’s one of my favorite people on the planet and I’m sure she’ll make Temple Beth-Israel swing like it’s never swung before.

Come on, this is fantastic! How great of your friend Allen to get this together for his mom.

Despite having sold over 50,000,000 records, I’m notorious for not going to concerts or clubs to see anyone perform any of them. I don’t like people standing up in front of me, singing next to me, I don’t like listening to songs when I’m ready to hit the forward arrow and go on to the next. So I’m the least likely person to ever say I’d love to see so-and-so perform. But there’s no doubt if I was anywhere near Skokie, Ill. on June 27th I’d be making the trek to see Shirley Shechtman.

Please send her my best. I look forward to seeing The Shirley Show on YouTube.
