Black/White/Yellow Square Bowl

Submitted by Michael M. July 26th, 2010

I picked up this square bowl at a flea market. It’s noted as Taste Setta Sigma Lacquer-Ware on the bottom. It’s sort of Memphis Group meets 70’s kitsch.

Alas, I wasn’t into any of this Memphis stuff. At the time it came out it looked like a bastardized version of the 50s to me, way too cold and hard edged. I can appreciate this bowl a little more now and there’s no arguing that Memphis had its day but that style always seemed so calculated to me with none of the free-form spirit of 50s artifacts that it sprung from.

I so agree with you about Memphis. I think I was drawn to this bowl for its graphicness. I do own a Sottsass vase (Vase Rochetto) that is one of my favorite pieces in my home.
