My mom made this pin for a party she had when she was a teenager in the early 60s. Somewhere there’s a picture of her and her friends all wearing them. It’s made out of Sasheen ribbon, styrofoam and fleece. I am very fond of him, hehe.

Here’s a photo to show you how big it is.

You know I go absolutely bonkers for homemade things like this. The little pins in the eyes and eyebrows kill me. That tiny little mouth is adorable and and the boxy, yellowish nature of the beard puts me in an exceptional mood today!

I love that the hat is made out of ribbon as opposed to one solid piece of something like red felt. This is the kind of Christmas pin I would wear all year round!

Haha, my mom was just tickled when I told her that her pin won Classique de Camembert! She lurks around here a bit though she doesn’t have an account. If I find the picture of her wearing it, I’ll send that in too, as it would be pretty good addition to this post.

She did want me to note that “the pin looked a lot better originally,” hehe. =)

We are both very glad that you liked it.

My mom makes the most beautiful bows out of Sasheen Ribbon! She taught me how to do it, too, but she’s much better at it than I am. She’s been buying old stock Sasheen online for a long time, so we have a big stash. We’ve written to 3M a ton of times requesting that they start making it again, but they always reply with the same boring form letter that says “Sorry we don’t make it anymore” which was obviously not read by a human but just a computer. I keep hoping maybe they’ll bring it back, it actually holds up well, so you can use 30 year old ribbon.. you can even iron it if it’s been crumpled… but you can’t really make those kind of bows with any other type of ribbon.

I love that you wrote 3M…sorry they didn’t write back, they could have some fun w/their great product. They can’t be that busy making scotch tape?
Am I remembering this right???…Didn’t the ribbon stick to itself???.. Did they make/sell a “bow” maker??? Do you have any of the great old books on gift wrapping ideas from the 1950’s, 1960’s, 1970’s?? Would love to see your packages?

oh wow, this is so wonderful!! how cool that it’s preserved so well! I truly love this and the story behind it……it’s lovely to know your mom is still making sasheen crafts too….wow, i haven’t heard the word “sasheen” in a long time!
