Bear Souvenir Ashtray |

I found this ashtray while going through some of my grandparents’ things. My grandpa used to smoke a pipe but stopped when I was born. Various ashtrays and other smoking tchotchkes are still stashed around the house. This one is prettier than most. I have no idea when or if my grandparents ever went to Minnesota, or if there are bears there, but this is a great memento, if you ask me.

I’m not a fan of the matte kind of glaze that’s on the bear’s head and outline but I love love love the kind of early 70s swirly lava flow thing that’s going on in his torso. So perfect for something concave like this. I also love that as state souvenirs go I’ve never seen one like this before.

The brown “bear” part of the thing seems to be some sort of metal. I was happy to find him.
