I absolutely love figures made out of shells especially when it’s as awkward as this one is. Is that a huge shell that he/she is mounted on? The fringe is, of course, a nice touch, looking like it was swiped off of a drape at the last minute when the artist couldn’t quite attach their shells together elegantly enough without a cover of some sort. Is that fringe tucked in front of his/her feet? Are those protruding shells just a lumpy stomach? Is that a baby coming out or what?
I’m not so sure that it’s a figure in a hula skirt. It looks more like a little Chinese Emperor or something to me and the fringe is meant to add to his/her regalness.
Confusion in shell art is a good and kitschy thing.

It reminds me of the hookah-smoking Caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland, but without the hookah.

This is great even though the little figurine looks as if the arms were cut off at the elbow.
