This is a vintage chuck wagon vinyl squeak dog toy made by the Ralston Purina Company in 1975. The gimmick for Chuck Wagon dog food is that you just add warm water to the chunks and you have a warm stew for your pooches. The toy is eight inches long, and was a premium giveaway corresponding with ads and TV commercials of that time –http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BBqgMQluDM . I don’t dare let my dogs play with this, as they have a bad habit of eating soft vinyl toys!

I totally remember trying to force feed my dog, Hawkeye, Chuck Wagon dog food because I thought the warm water really made it look like real food. It never worked. I also tried to ply him with plastic toys like this but he and every other dog I ever had never went for it, preferring anything made of rope or fabric over rubber anything.

I do think the toy is adorable though. I also think the ad copywriter was stoned.

Unfortunately Frappy and Monkey eat soft toys, so we don’t go there. The last time we gave Monkey a little plastic hot dog to play with, he ate the whole thing (sweaker and all). We laughed that if we would squeeze him, he might sweak!
